After taking my first photography class I had to have my own darkroom. Then, following an immersion in B&W photography, I began a graduate program in art history. This endeavor took me to Italy and the study of ancient art. Due to the constraints of time and energy, I began to carry color film only, but took advantage of the image-rich environment to capture the visual feast before me. Fifteen years ago however I came back to the satisfying work in the darkroom with black and white film and paper, creating images in a pool of light-sensitive emulsions.
My interest in alternative photography processes has led me to one of the earliest developments, dating from the 1850s: Collodion Wet Plate. I have always admired the irregularities and imperfections of it, because working with the wet collodion is highly conducive to error. But, like Sally Mann, an esteemed collodion photographer, and my inspiration, I try to make myself available to the Angel of Uncertainty, the angel responsible for those flaws that erupt and conveniently contribute to an interesting picture. As a result I consider my adventure with Collodion Wet Plate to be a cooperative activity, a collaboration. After producing a negative on a glass plate, I then make a Gelatin-Silver print in the darkroom.
